Friendship Village Completes $39.5 Million Expansion Project

The $39.5 million expansion and redevelopment project at Friendship Village of South Hills is officially complete. Kick-started in the summer of 2017, the project added a new building with 50 assisted living apartments, 32 memory care suites, and various amenities and wellness services to the senior living community.

“It’s been an honor to serve area seniors for more than three decades and this expansion ensures we can continue to meet their needs for many more years to come,” said Bryan Welty, executive director at Friendship Village. “These additional assisted living and memory care offerings speak to the sense of security we offer residents and the assurance they will be well-taken care of at any stage.”

The substantial local aging population was also a catalyst for the expanded offerings. Nearly 20% of people in Alleghany County are 65 or older, according to the United States Census Bureau.

“As the Baby Boomer generation retires, there’s a growing need for quality senior living options not only in the Pittsburgh area, but nationwide,” said Larry Smith, interim president and CEO at Lifespace Communities, Friendship Village’s parent company. “It’s a privilege to spearhead projects like this that will have a significant positive impact on older adults and their families. Friendship Village and Lifespace are committed to continually investing in the people we serve, and this expansion exemplifies our dedication.”

The expansion was designed by Perkins Eastman Architects, with LECESSE Construction as the general contractor.
